Hanging Baskets

Hanging Baskets are an easy way to bring your outdoor area to life with stunning displays of colour which you can change with the seasons. If you have limited outdoor space or live in an apartment, hanging baskets are the ultimate space saver as they can be hung from the roof, balconies or even mounted to the wall.

You don’t have to limit your self just to flowers, herbs and vegetables greens can also be grown from a hanging basket.

Getting Started

The first thing to think about when planning hanging baskets is the microclimate where you plan to have the baskets. Is the spot windy, in full sun, part shade or full shade”? This will determine the variety of plants which will be most suited.

When buying hanging baskets looks for gauge of the wire used. The sturdier the construction the longer the life you will have from the basket. Check the hangers used on the basket. Plastic hangers will degrade and become brittle in the New Zealand sun, wire chain hangers will last longer and provide strong hanging support.

Look at the shape of the basket. If the basket has a flat bottom, then it will be easier to pot and the wider and deeper the basket the less you will have to water it.

Use a potting mix that contains a wetting agent, water-holding crystals and a controlled-release fertiliser or try one developed for hanging baskets.

You can mix and match different plants or keep it simple and use just the one variety. Plant baskets which will be hung at eye level or slightly below like a traditional pot. Position the tallest plant, or plants, in the centre, then shorter and trailing plants towards the middle and edges. Baskets hung above eye level don’t need a centre plant and look best with cascading plants that cover the sides of the pot.

Maintenance

Watering – don’t let your hanging baskets dry out. Continual watering through out the season will ensure your plants stay health.

Fertiliser – it pays to feed your plants throughout the season to encourage growth and more flowers.

Dead heading – this is very important for annuals as by dead heading you will encourage more growth and flowers.
