Here at Eurowire, we supply heavy grade steel stakes coated with a green plastic covering to help them blend into your garden's natural environment. Each stake is also dipped and sealed with red plastic to prevent rusting while in use and allow our garden stakes in NZ to penetrate any type of garden soil with ease. These stakes also come with outer grip lines designed to help hold plant ties in place for maximum security and support.
If you have any questions about how our stakes can help your plants grow strong and upright, please contact our team at sales@eurowire.co.nz.
What Is Staking A Plant?
'Staking' refers to the process of driving upright stakes into the ground and fastening them to plants using plant ties or other materials. They allow a plant to keep growing upward despite opposing forces.
Some plants grow upright but may need assistance to withstand rain, wind, or their own top-heavy weight. By staking them, you offer your plants, flowers and vegetables the support and structure they need so they can continue growing unimpeded.
Which Plants Should Be Staked?
Many types of plants can benefit from our garden stakes in NZ. The question as to whether it is necessary to stake a particular plant depends on multiple factors, such as its size, growth stages, and where it is growing.
The following types of plants can all benefit from being staked:
Flowering Perennials
Perennials such as peonies, lilies and dahlias can benefit from staking during their growing season. If attached to stakes during the early spring, they can grow fuller during the height of the season, resulting in a more beautiful garden.
Vegetables
Many vegetable plants cannot handle their own weight and may require extra support. An excellent example of these is tomatoes, which any gardener should stake every growing season if they are not using a tomato cage. Capsicums are another plant that can also benefit from the extra support provided by garden stakes in NZ.
Saplings
Staking isn't just beneficial for flowers and vegetable plants. Young trees may also need to be staked to be able to grow upright, especially if they are growing in windy or rainy conditions, such as on clifftop areas.
Why Should I Stake A Tree?
If your tree has been planted in an exposed site where it is subject to rain and heavy wind, or is a large plant that may require short-term stabilisation while it grows, staking may be necessary to give it proper support.
We advise that you place the stakes lower on your tree's trunk to help hold the root ball steady in the ground.
It is also important to remember that you should only leave garden stakes on your tree for 9-12 months. You should also never affix it to stakes using wires or anything that could cut into and damage the bark.
We also recommend using multiple garden stakes in NZ to provide your trees with secure, balanced support.
We Stock Garden Stakes in a Different Range of Sizes
Stakes can be made of wood, bamboo, plastic, or durable, high-quality metal, like the range of garden stakes available here at Eurowire. You can then affix a plastic tie to the stake to attach it to the plant.
To stake a plant, hammer the stake in question about six inches into the ground as near as possible to the plant where you don't have to force it in hard, which could damage or even sever its roots.
Find a spot about two-thirds the way up the plant and attach it to the stake using plastic ties, garden twine or ties.
In some cases, a single stake may not be enough to provide a plant with the support it needs. Such plants can be attached to multiple supports as necessary.
Our garden stakes in NZ are ideal for providing strong support for any flowering garden plants, vegetables, or trees.
Avoid tying your plant to a stake with string, rope, or wire, as these materials can cut into the stem and damage your plant. If you can't find plastic plant ties, strips of stretch fabric such as old pantyhose will be a suitable replacement for home gardeners. You should also be able to find balls of interlock fabric ties at most garden centres, which are also suitable alternatives.
Should I Stake My Plants?
Providing your plants with a stake or similar support is often necessary to stop their stems from snapping. When this happens, your plants could flop over or even fall down entirely.
While some gardeners might try to avoid using garden stakes NZ because they dislike how they look, stakes are sometimes necessary to help your plant grow to its best.
Staking can also be highly beneficial if your garden is in an exposed place where your plants are often subject to heavy rain or forceful gusts of wind. In such a case, garden stakes can help your plant withstand the impact of the elements.
If your plant grows fruit or flowers that are too large and heavy for its stems, staking can provide it with the support it needs to stay upright and keep looking strong and healthy.
After all, a garden full of drooping plants or flowers dragging in the dirt is a much less pleasant sight than one with a few discreet stakes. Our Eurowire garden stakes in NZ are also painted green, which allows them to blend better into your garden and merge into your beautiful greenery. These unified colours will allow your garden to appear more organised as well.
We also stock garden stakes in sizes ranging from 900mm to 2400mm, ensuring that you have all the supplies you need to provide your plant with adequate support throughout its lifespan.
Proper staking will give your trees, flowers and vegetables the stability they need to grow to their full brilliance. If you would like to learn more about how our Eurowire garden stakes in NZ can benefit your garden or would like advice on the correct size of stakes for your needs, please get in touch with our team at sales@eurowire.co.nz.
